Begun, the Expensive Light Mod War has…

BronImaging has introduced a $489.00 bracket that will allow you to mount your Profoto head on a $2,317.00 Para 88 reflector.

Meanwhile, on a remote planet all the way back into your price range, a $10 Home Depot lamp globe will mount directly onto your Einstein and/or AlienBees flash, right out of the box…

I can't wait until they release a Diamond encrusted 1/4-20 thumb screw for a mere $2k. Broncolor already is NOT the industry standard, do they want to dig themselves a grave, really?

Elinchrom has a Profoto adapter for all Rotalux soft boxes, #26531 I believe. This is a complete speed ring adapter. Use it on the deep octa 39, the 5ft octa....I found one in Canada for $120 USD. Not that bad...l

Profoto engineers continued to be stymied in their efforts to produce a working (e.g. resistant to instant vaporization) bracket allowing their modifiers to mount directly onto the sun.

This piece of metal can not possibly cost that much, fair and square.

Damn marketologists.

They think "if that guy can charge $500\shooting day then it's OK to charge him more".

I hope in states there is a tax deduction for buying pieces of metal like that. The whole damn new computer would cost as much as this metal ring!!!

I was looking through some of the Matthews Studio Equipment catalog and while I'm not surprised at the price of C-Stands and Rollers, I was surprised at the prices of some of their clamps, like the $105 Quacker Clamp, their $70+ Mattelini clamps, etc. Just add the word "photography" to anything and you can double the retail price, haha!

Please tell me the braket is made out of titanium, carbon-fibre and diamond dust 'cause otherwise......489 Dollar for a bit of metal and a screw???
maybe I should try to buy ordinary items and resell them with a slogan saying "photography equip". I could charge three times the price.....

When I got the email announcing this ridiculous waste of money, I was tempted to write something about it.....but then I realized I just didn't give a damn!

if you take into consideration that they may only sell a few thousand a year internationally, plus the cost of the tooling and setting up the machinery to manufacture, you start to see why they're so expensive. And considering there's nothing in the Profoto range that can do what the Para can do, the 500 bucks for that bracket is a lot cheaper than swapping your Profoto kit for Bron.

Also, Broncolor might not the be the "standard" in the US, but down here in Sydney Australia the vast majority of advertising photographers use and abuse Broncolor packs. And I have to say, having worked with both the Pro 8 and the Scoro I'd take the Scoros any day! They're not cheap at 12k a pack, but if you need that sort of thing it's absolutely worth it.

...and that's my problem with all those fancy branded photo stuff out there: even the cheapest piece of plastic / metal (sorry, let's call it a bracket :-)) costs 10 times more (at least) when its a _photo_ piece of plastic / metal in its name.
If it comes from a nice brand manufacturer, multiply by 2 - 5 again. :-(((

This is a very specific piece of kit that they will maybe sell to a few hundred photographers worldwide... so I understand why it's so expensive. It's pretty simple economics. It's really not just a mark-up based on their brand. Also maybe it IS an australian thing, because Broncolor is definitely seems to be the advertising industry standard here.

From the POV of someone who's assisted solidly the last few years using the whole gamut of gear, I can also say Broncolor is better. Unfortunately now it means I am saving for my own Scoro. The relief is that the new generation is actually significantly cheaper than the last which is a relief!!!
